Hello Everybody.
This is an entry that may not apply to everyone. That being said, it’s still very important part of creativity.
Picture it like what taking out the recycling is to foreplay.
When it comes to songwriting, I have started to notice a trend that for the most part is a little disconcerting. I’d work alongside creative people who have really amazing work…
…that they never seem to stop tweaking. Ever.
At some point as a songwriter/failed journalist it gets frustrating because they’ll never finish their projects. You can tweak, edit and rework your stuff until the cows come home but at the end of the day, you have to just throw it out there.
Little known fact about SFK: the original demo versions of the songs I’ve written sound awful.
These are songs that I have written myself. I have no understanding of music theory or basic timing and despite that, I put what I’ve got out there. This is how songs like Paper Cranes, Ode To A Songwriter, and Mrs. Demeanor get mapped out. As a solo musician I suck, but when I have people who can critique and offer their expertise, that’s when magic happens.
I’m not saying that you should be sending out half assed work either though. Despite what I’ve said, I at least try to fully map out a song with Verses, Pre-Choruses, Choruses, Bridges, Solos, Outros, Melodies and possible vocal harmonies.
What I’m basically saying is, do as best you can with what you have but don’t be afraid of it never being good enough to send. Whether it’s art, music, a novel, a video, etc. Get it out to the people because this is how you grow your skills.
You don’t level up unless you do something, which is why I’m a level 3 Frontman and a level 2 wise ass.
Cheers,
Matt Di Leo
